West Georgetown is the newest side of the city — Wolf Ranch on both sides of Highway 29, Rancho Sienna and Water Oak toward Liberty Hill, Parkside on the River, Cimarron Hills, Escalera Ranch and the acreage along Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Highway 29 — and almost all of it sits on the Edwards limestone rather than the Blackland clay east of the interstate. The trees are Hill Country trees: live oaks and post oaks the developers kept as the reason to buy the lot, Ashe juniper (cedar) thickets on the unbuilt ground, cedar elms and hackberries in the draws, and the young oaks and elms the landscapers planted. Oak wilt is the west side's problem — it spreads through live oak root systems and it has active centers in Williamson County — and every HOA out here reviews what happens to a tree.

When can live oaks be pruned in west Georgetown?

July through January, with every cut painted. February through June is the oak wilt danger window — the beetles that spread the fungus are active and fresh wounds attract them. We won't prune a live oak then except for storm damage, and we paint that.

My neighbor's oak has oak wilt — is mine next?

Possibly, if the roots are grafted, which live oaks within 50 to 100 feet of each other usually are. A trench between the trees breaks the graft. We diagnose it and tell you honestly what the odds are.

Does the HOA review tree removal?
